A LITERATURE REVIEW OF AGE-RELATED HELATH AND TOXICOLOGICAL EFFECTS
Impact/Purpose:
Review abstracts of published age-related health and toxicological endpoints
Description:
EPA employs a number uncertainty factors to account for variability arising from a variety of sources in the data used in the determination of a RfC or RfD for a chemical agent. The question remains open today whether the Intra-Human Uncertainty Factor adequately covers age-related susceptibility differences in the general population. Of interest are life-stage susceptibility differences during development, post-development, maturation, and aging. A review of the peer-reviewed literature on life-stage susceptibility differences published since 1980 was conducted. The information of interest include, test species, exposures, toxic effects, and test methodology. Uses of the information may include the identification of appropriate report or case studies appropriate for use in assessing the adequacy of uncertainty factors, and information gaps that could help point to further research.
