MONITORING ENVIRONMENTAL RADIATION IN THE UNITED STATES(RADNET)

Impact/Purpose:

The objective of this activity is to assure accurate data on levels of radiation in the environment to support emergency response activities and decisions; it includes determination of baseline levels of radiation and levels during actual emergencies.

Description:

Operate a national network of sampling stations that regularly submit environmental samples of air, precipitation and drinking water; analyze all samples for radiation at the laboratory; and report data to the public and the radiation protection community. During national radiation emergencies, data are used to support emergency response decisions and activities at the state, regional, and federal levels. The system has potential application to homeland security activities and concerns. The existing system data base includes 1973 to the present. This system was formerly called ERAMS: Environmental Radiation Ambient Monitoring System.
