SEDIMENT ASSESSMENT AND REMEDIATION PROGRAM

Impact/Purpose:

The intent is to provide the environmental manager with methods for making cost-effective, environmentally sound decisions.

Description:

Assessment and Remediation of Contaminated Sediments (ARCS) is an integrated program for the development and testing of assessment and remedial action alternatives for contaminated sediments. Information from ARCS program activities will be used to guide the development of Remedial Action Plans (RAPs) for the 43 Great Lakes Areas of Concern (AOCs, as identified by the United States and Canadian Governments), as well as Lakewide Management Plans. Although GLNPO is responsible for administering the ARCS Program, it is a multi-organization endeavor. Other participants in ARCS include the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (ACE), the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS), the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the U.S. Department of Interior, EPA headquarters offices, EPA laboratories, EPA Regions II, III and V, Great Lakes State Agencies, numerous universities, and public interest groups.
