LAKE PONTCHARTRAIN ESTUARY CONSERVATION PLAN

Impact/Purpose:

The primary objective of this project is to identify steps needed in the Lake Pontchartrain Estuary to support healthy aquatic and wetland communities and species populations based on rare species, keystone species or habitats, and natural community needs. The work proposed by the Nature Conservancy will produce information that will support the goals and objectives of the GMP Habitat Focus Team.

Description:

The Nature Conservancy will conduct a series of a least four science expert workshops to develop a Site Conservation Plan for the Lake Pontchartrain Estuary and adjacent wetlands. The objective of the Site Conservation Plan is to identify conservation targets, threats or stresses to conservation targets, sources of stress, strategies to abate those threats, and to establish measures of success to track threat abatement for the entire estuary. Strategies developed will address a variety of issues such as water quality, invasive and exotic species, habitat restoration, research needs, and educational outreach.
