SYSTEMWIDE (NEW YORK/NEW JERSEY HARBOR, NEW YORK BIGHT, LONG ISLAND SOUND) EUTROPHICATION MODEL

Impact/Purpose:

Apply nutrient management scenarios to the Systemwide Eutrophication Model and compare to LIS 3.0 model results to support evaluations of nitrogen management efforts for Long Island Sound.

Description:

SWEM is a coupled set of state-of-the-art, three-dimensional time-dependent models for computing circulation and mixing patterns for evaluating eutrophication dynamics. Information supplied by the hydrodynamic model to the water quality model consists of time-varying flows rates, mixing parameters, depths, volumes, salinity and temperatures. It provides a tool to assess the effect of nutrient management scenarios on the dissolved oxygen response in Long Island Sound.
