RISKS TO CHILDREN FROM EXPPOSURE TO LEAD IN AIR DURING REMEDIAL OR REMOVAL ACTIVITIES AT SUPERFUND SITES: A CASE STUDY OF THE RSR LEAD SMELTER SUPERFUND SITE

Impact/Purpose:

Product will be used by other project managers and modelers to evaluate the risk from incidental exposure to lead contamination during demolition and/or excavation activities at Superfund sites.

Description:

The study explored modeling approaches for assessing potential risks to children from air lead emisions from the RSR Superfund site in Dallas, TX. The EPA Integrated Exposure Uptake Biokinetic model and the International Radiologic Protection lead model were used to simulate blood lead concentrations in children based on monitored air lead concentrations. The estimated potential long and short term exposures downwind of the site sis not result in more than 5% of children exceeding target blood lead levels.
