WEST PLUM CREEK WETLANDS ASSESSMENT PROJECT

Impact/Purpose:

Douglas County is one of the fastest developing areas in the US. Rapid urbanization is fragmenting and degrading significant wetland resources and wildlife habitat of the West Plum Creek watershed. Road construction, increased fencing, lighting, noise, and pollution is accompanying this increased development.

The information collected will be critical to the Douglas County Division of Open Space and the Open Space Advisory Committee in strategizing and prioritizing conservation projects.

Description:

This project will assist Douglas County and other conservation partners by assessing the types and locations of wetland resources in the watershed. This study will involve site visits by ecologists, botanists, and other wetland experts. Study results will be mapped using GIS software. The Douglas County Division of Open Space & Natural Resources seeks to protect these resources through a variety of conservation projects and collaborative efforts. The West Plum Creek Wetlands Assessment Project seeks to study the wetland resources of the watershed and make recommendations about long-term conservation priorities and strategies. Products will include: 1) A map of the project area identifying unique wetland features 2) Determination of the location of rare plant communities 3) Determination of habitat areas for wildlife 4) A preliminary report documenting and analyzing initial findings 5) A final report combining data from existing sources and data gathered during the study 6) Strategies and recommendations for encouraging public/private partnerships for conservation
