ASSESSING CUMULATIVE IMPACTS TO WETLANDS

Impact/Purpose:

The Geographic Information System (GIS) developed from this project will be used by environmental and regulatory officials at EPA, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, and Water Management Districts within the State of Florida. This system will assist in the review of Environmental Resources Permits involving wetlands and nearby surface waters.

Description:

Assessing wetland functions, the degree of impairment caused by human activity, and opportunities to restore ecological integrity are central to managing water resources, including surface waters, wetlands, and open waters. Evaluating cumulative impacts on these water resources is critical to any assessment. To this end an interagency GIS system and supporting applications are being developed to assist in the review of permit applications covering wetlands and the movement of surface water in non-wetland areas.
