EPA ORD RISK MANAGEMENT APPROACH TO DRINKING WATER RESEARCH

Citation:

Thurnau*, R C. EPA ORD RISK MANAGEMENT APPROACH TO DRINKING WATER RESEARCH. Presented at 11th International Activated Carbon Conference, Pittsburgh, PA, 09/25-26/2003.

Description:

The approach to managing the risks associated with many environmental concerns has changed over the last five years with more emphasis being placed on integrating sound science into the more complex mix of socio-economic considerations facing American society today. This paper goes over the changes undertaken by EPA to better align its research programs with problems of National interest. A subset of that approach is the application of different treatment technologies (activated carbon being one) to the control of chemicals on the Contaminant Candidate List (CCL). The data generated with activated carbon indicates that 34 of the 37 measurable chemicals on the CCL are effectively removed by the material. Additional testing has completed/ongoing with conventional treatment, softening, advanced oxidation and membranes. Testing on conventional oxidate techniques will begin next year. The former data weill be published and presented in the immediate future, with the rest of the data to follow next year. Information collected on the treatability of CCL chemicals will be used by the Program Office (office of water) as input for their regulatory determination process.
