WEBPAGE ON ENDOCRINE DISRUPTOR CHEMICALS, PHARMACEUTICALS, AND PERSONAL CARE PRODUCTS - UPDATE 6/28/02

Citation:

Description:

The presence of endocrine disruptors, pharmaceuticals, and personal care products in the environment and in drinking waters is a growing concern in the US. The definition of endocrine disruptors is a matter of debate, however, a simple definition is that endocrine disruptors are chemicals that interfere with the normal function of the endocrine system. Pharmaceutical and personal care products are not defined by a specific health effect such as for endocrine disruptors, but rather include all products that are used as pharmaceuticals or personal care products. Everyone is exposed to endocrine disruptors, pharmaceuticals, or personal care products either directly or indirectly; however, the occurrence of many of these compounds in the environment and in drinking water is widely unknown because almost no monitoring has been conducted, especially in the US.

An informational web page was constructed that covers the following aspects of endocrine disruptors, pharmaceuticals, and personal care products: multiple definitions of endocrine disruptors, background on the endocrine system, number of identified chemicals of concern, occurrence, current and future drinking water regulations, current research projects, water treatment summary and references, past and future conferences, and links to other sites. The site is meant to be a location where people interested in the topic of endocrine disruptors, pharmaceuticals, and personal care products in drinking waters can go for general information. The list of references and links to other web sites can serve as a launching point for specialized literature reviews.
