t is now apparent that there is a great potential for UVR to impact microbial carbon cycling and
biogeochemical processes. Although variability in effects has been observed, all of the organisms involved may be directly damaged by UB-B and may be indirectly damaged by UV-A. By the nature of food web interactions, any effect on one trophic group will also impact on others. Photochemical reactions may also result in the production of deleterious chemical compounds. In contrast, UV-B and UV-A may photochemically produce more labile substrates that would stimulate bacterial production. UV-A may also serve to provide the energy for photoreactivation. As a result, predicting responses to environmental UVR may be difficult at best. It is likely that the type of response observed will be determined by local environmental conditions, as well as the species composition of the organisms exposed. A better understanding of the environmental conditions influencing UVR response and identification of sensitive (and insensitive) species may enhance the ability to predict when UVR impact may be greatest.
