Description:

The purpose of this chapter is to review the various mechanisms through which EDCs elicit their effects, specifically focusing on the insight gained from wildlife studies. This review will be organized based on the model presented in Fig. 1-1; we will examine the potential for EDCs to alter each point in the steroid hormone pathway. We believe that this method will both provide an organizational framework to the apparently disparate mechanisms of endocrine disruption and introduce an evolutionary perspective to the effects of endocrine-altering contaminants.
