Description:

The applicability of using microbial population measures as indicators of aquatic condition has a rich history based primarily to study factors that affect the sanitary and ecological condition of fresh water streams. These studies are generally conducted by collecting water site specific sites often on a routine basis. In this study we have used a stratified random design which permits the extrapolation of our results across the State of Oregon from a relatively few sample locations. Using this approach we were not only able to discern regional differences in the traditional public health bacterial indicators, but correlations with several of the ecological disturbance metrics were also observed.
