Description:

This paper will summrize thie pollution prevention (p2) method to control stack emissions from hard chromium plating operations performed by the USEPA's National Risk Management Research Laboratory (NRMRL) over the last four years. During literature research and user surveys, it was found that the hard chrome plating industry had traditionally regarded FS as unsuitable for use due to safety issues and "pitting problems". Pitting has been identified as defects in the base metal, along with inadequate base metal preparation and hydrogen (gas) pitting that occurs within the chromium deposity. Millage and Hague hypothesize that fune suppressants 'aggravate' hydrogen pitting due to the longer hydrogen bubble growth and release cycle. Fume suppressant suppliers indicated that a resolution of most of these problems has been achieved with the introduction in the late 1980's, of third generation FS.
