CLAY AND CLAY-SUPPORTED REAGENTS HAVE BEEN USED EXTENSIVELY FOR SYNTHETIC ORGANIC TRANSFORMATIONS. THIS OVERVIEW DESCRIBES THE SALIENT STRUCTURAL PROPERTIES OF VARIOUS CLAY MATERIALS AND EXTENDS THE DISCUSSION TO PILLARED CLAYS AND REAGENTS SUPPORTED ON CLAY MATERIALS. A VARIETY OF SYNTHETICALLY USEFUL ORGANIC REACTIONS THAT ARE CONDUCTED ON THE SURFACES OF CLAY OR MODIFIED CLAY SUPPORTS ARE SUMMARIZED INCLUDING THE RECENT WORK FROM OUR LABORATORY WHICH EXPLOITS THE USE OF RELATIVELY BENIGN REAGENTS UNDER SOLVENT FREE CONDITIONS USING MICROWAVE IRRIDIATION. THE REPORT ENCOMPASSES CLEAVAGE, CONDENSATION, OXIDATION, AND REDUCTION REAGENTS IN SOLVENTLESS PROCESSES THAT PROCEED VERY RAPIDLY AND REQUIRE ONLY BRIEF EXPOSURE OF NEAT REACTANTS TO MICROWAVE (MW) IRRADIATION ON CLAY-SUPPORTED REAGENTS.
