Description:
Steam Enhanced Remediation is a process in which steam is injected into the subsurface to recover volatile and semivolatile organic contaminants. It has been applied successfully to recover contaminants from soil and aquifers and at a fractured granite site. This SITE demonstration at Loring Air Force Base in Limestone, Maine, was the first time the technology was used at a site composed entirely of fractured limestone. The evaluation approach included a detailed characterization of the fracture system, the hydrogeology, and contaminant distribution of the site, based on which a stream injection and extraction system was designed. Daily effluent samples of both the vapor and liquid phases were obtained to determine the amount of contaminant mass recovered. Pre and post-treatment groundwater and rock samples will also be used to evaluate the process. Effluent samples showed increases in contaminant recoveries as the site was heated.
