Description:

This report summarizes the results of a field demonstration conducted under the SITE Program. The technology which was demonstrated was a wastewater treatment technology developed by Zenon Environmental Inc. The process, named ZenoGem™, integrates biological treatment with membrane based ultrafiltration to treat wastewater with high concentrations of organic contaminants. The SITE Program evaluated an application of the technology at the Nascolite Superfund site in Millville, NJ. The site was contaminated with methyl methacrylate (MMA), volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and heavy metals. The purpose of the demonstration was to obtain information on the performance and cost of the technology and assess its use at this and other hazardous waste sites. This report interprets the demonstration data and discusses the potential applicability of the technology. The results of the demonstration showed the technology consistently surpassed the demonstration goal of 95% reduction of MMA and 95% reduction of the Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD). Average removals were 99.99 + 0.01% for MMA and 96.8 + 5.0% for COD. Reductions of greater than 97% were noted in all VOCs reported. Volatilization of MMA and VOCs was not significant. Detailed cost analyses were performed for two different scenarios: groundwater treatment and leachate treatment. The results of these analyses are included in this report.
