Description:

The USEPA has developed a handbook to help state and local governmental officials implement near-real-time water quality monitoring and outreach programs with step-by-step instructions on how to: 1) Employ satellite and robotic water monitoring equipment, 2) collect, transfer, and manage real-time water quality data, 3) develop images to present water quality monitoring data, and 4) communicate real-time water quality information.
EPA's Office of Environmental Information and ORD prepared the handbook jointly in support of the EMPACT project in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana. The EMPACT program takes advantage of new technologies that make possible to provide near real-time environmental information to the public. EMPACT is working with the 86 largest metropolitan areas to help communities 1) Collect, manage and distribute time-relevant environmental information, and 2) provide residents with easy-to-understand information they can use in making informed day-to-day decisions about the environment.
