Description:

The paper presents a mathematical model of total mercury removed from the flue gas at coal-fired plants equipped with powdered activated carbon (PAC) injection for Mercury control. The developed algorithms account for mercury removal by both existing equipment and an added PAC injection system and are flexible enough to be tailored to the sorbent used at the plant since mercury removal depends on the sorbent. The algorithms, based on recent full-scale demonstrations, were developed for PAC injection in plants (1) firing subbituminous coal and having a cold-side electrostatic precipitator (C-ESP), (2) firing bituminous coal and having a hot-side ESP (H-ESP) followed by a pulse jet fabric filter (PJFF), and (3) firing bituminous coal and having a cold-side ESP (C-ESP). Performance predicted by the model is compared with data collected at four power plants that, together, cover these three combinations of pollution control equipment and coals fired.
