Description:
The purpose of water treatment is threefold: 1. To improve the aethetic quality ofwater, 2. to remove toxic or health-hazardous chemicals, 3. to remove and/or inactivate any disease causing microorganisms. These objectives should be accomplished using a reasonable safety factor in designing the tretment processes and as economically as possible. The approach to achieving these objectives is the multiple barrier concept. The multiple barrier concept for safe drinking water embodies several elements designed to help assure the production and protection of a safe drinking water supply. This concept recognizes that no single process can be relied upon to consistently produce water that is safe for human consumption, but the combination of several processes, or barriers, can provide safe, healthful drinking water. The multiple barriers are: source wate quality, pre-treatment; treatment including chemical coagulation, sedimentation, filtration, disinfection and education.
