GEOGRAPHY AND ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY

Citation:

White, R D. GEOGRAPHY AND ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY. Presented at Saturday Academy Apprenticeships in Science and Engineering Conference, Corvallis, OR, July 12, 2003.

Description:

The US Environmental Protection Agency helps state and local governments protect the environment by encouraging good environmental management and by regulating human activities to ensure clean air and water. At the Corvallis research laboratory for the EPA, we improve the ways that EPA can provide assistance in environmental management and the methods that EPA can use in developing and administering its regulations. Many, if not most, of EPA activities have a geographical aspect because the environment is different from place to place and, hence, environmental protection should respond to such differences. Geographers at EPA help the agency understand these differences by designing geographical frameworks for environmental monitoring and management, by making maps of environmental phenomena, and by developing models that explicitly show the geographical aspects of environmental issues.
