PERFLUOROOCTANOIC ACID (PFOA): INVESTIGATION FOR POSSIBLE ENDOCRINE EFFECTS IN FACTORY WORKERS AND CORRELATION WITH RESULTS FROM ANIMAL STUDIES

Citation:

Cicmanec*, J L. PERFLUOROOCTANOIC ACID (PFOA): INVESTIGATION FOR POSSIBLE ENDOCRINE EFFECTS IN FACTORY WORKERS AND CORRELATION WITH RESULTS FROM ANIMAL STUDIES. Presented at Third International Conference on Pharmaceuticals and EDCs in Water, Minneapolis, MN, 3/19-21/2003.

Description:

This presentation summarizes a quantitative risk assessment procedure that was performed in West Virginia in response to a Court Order. Briefly, two putative endocrine effects had been observed in factory workers and even though a large number of animal studies which had already been scheduled to be done, additional analyses were added to be sure that the effects noted in factory workers did not also occur in the animal studies. These effects, elevated cholecytokinin and estrogen, were not observed in the animal studies. The presentation also provides a brief listing of the animal and laboratory studies that were performed in order to more fully characterize the toxicological and environmental effects that could be associated with PFOA.
