Description:

In 1976, fluorine in human blood serum was thought to be present as perfluorooctanic acid; however, in the 1990s it was correctly identified by LC/MS as perfluorooctanesulfonate (PFOS). PFOS was both a commercial product and an end-stage metabolite of numerous substituted amides of perfluorooctanesulfonic acid. Our search of the literature indicated that little information was available about their chromatographic and mass spectral characteristics; therefore we investigated PFOS and three amides using GC and LC, with EI, CE, +/- CI and ES ionization. - - - ES ionization in the negative ion mode produced intense M-H and M-K ions for I, II, and III, and the K+ salt of PFOS, respectively. MS/MS of PFOS (m/z 499) produced ions diagnostic of both the sulfonyl portion and the fluorinated chain portion of the molecule, while M-H of I, II, and III produced only ions diagnostic of the fluorinated chain.
