Description:

EPA Region 3 to implement a long-term research, monitoring, and assessment program in the Mid-Atlantic region - the Mid-Atlantic Integrated Assessment (MAIA). The MAIA mission is to develop a broad-based partnership to integrate scientific knowledge into the decision-making process for the Mid-Atlantic. The science conducted under the MAIA is focused on policy and management issues of critical importance to resource managers and environmental decision-makers.

The MAIA Team, located at Ft. Meade, MD, has developed strong partnerships with most of the Federal and State agencies, many local agencies and NGOs, academia, and private sector components with responsibilities for environmental issues in the Mid-Atlantic region.

MAIA partners are responsible for many monitoring and research programs within the Mid-Atlantic region which are designed to address specific issues and programmatic goals often based on specific legislative mandates. These program?specific approaches focus on different resources, use different methods, and have different temporal or spatial scales of resolution, making it difficult to combine programs or to contribute to similar national assessments of environmental conditions.

The MAIA partnership fosters collaboration among these disparate programs. Together, the partners develop, refine, validate, and implement innovative approaches for environmental assessment and management which can be transferred not only to MAIA partners and alliances, but also to other EPA Regions, federal, state, and local agencies, academics, Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), the public, and other stakeholders.
