Namboodiri**, V AND R S. Varma*. IRON(III) NITRATE-CATALYZED FACILE SYNTHESIS OF DIPHENYLMETHYL (DPM) ETHERS FROM ALCOHOLS. Presented at 223rd National Meeting of the American Chemical Society, Orlando, FL, 4/7-11/2002.

Description:

Diphenyl methyl (DPM) ethers constitute important structural portion of some pharmaceutical entities and also as protective group for hydroxyl groups in synthetic chemistry. DPM ethers are normally prepared using concentrated acids or base as catalysts, which may result in the formation of by-products in compounds bearing sensitive functional groups. A general and eco-friendly method for the preparation of DPM ethers of primary, secondary and tertiary alcohols will be described using iron(III) nitrate as catalyst and the catalytic efficiency of the process will be highlighted.
