Description:
Room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs), molten salts comprised of N-alkylimidazolium cations and various anions, have received significant attention due to their commercial potential in a variety of chemical applications especially as substitutes for conventional volatile organic solvents. An efficient protocol for the preparation of a wide variety of RTILs based on alkyl imidazolium cations bearing tetrafluoroborate, hexafluorophosphate, as anions will be described. The use of relatively inexpensive, safer and neat ammonium tetrafluoroborate or aqueous ammonium hexafluorophosphate as substitutes for expensive silver salts or aqueous acidic solutions will be highlighted.
