Citation:

Dufour, A P. RISK AND RISK ASSESSMENT IN WATER-BASED RECREATION. Presented at WHO Public Health Seminar - Recreational Waters: Risks & Benefits, Rome, Italy, February 19, 1999.

Impact/Purpose:

Develop new bathing beach monitoring protocols and new approaches for communicating risks associated with swimming and other recreational water activities.

Description:

The great number of individuals using recreational water resources presents a challenge with regard to protecting the health of these recreationists. Risk assessment provides a framework for characterizing the risk associated with exposure to microbial hazards and for managing recreational water resources. This presentation will review the process of risk assessment as it rlates to microbial hazards associated with recreational waters. The process includes hazard identification, effects assessment, exposure assessment and risk characterization. Examples relevant to each step in the process will be discussed. This process will lead to rational decision making by risk manager, who have the ultimate responsibility for maintaining safe recreational waters.
