AN OVERVIEW OF THE AQUATIC ECOLOGICAL RISKS POSED BY DIOXIN-LIKE CHEMICALS

Citation:

Cook, P. M. AN OVERVIEW OF THE AQUATIC ECOLOGICAL RISKS POSED BY DIOXIN-LIKE CHEMICALS. Presented at NHEERL/OERR Seminar, Arlington, VA, July 10, 2002.

Description:

This seminar will provide a basic overview of how 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (a.k.a. TCDD or "dioxin") and dioxin-like chemicals (e.g., certain PCBs) bioaccumulate and affect non-human receptors in aquatic food webs; the latest on applications of the toxicity equivalence model for assessing ecological risks associated with exposures of fish, birds, and mammals to complex mixtures of dioxin-like chemicals; and the integration of these factors in ecological risk assessments. The relationships between concentrations of dioxin-like chemicals in sediments and their actual potencies expected in receptor organisms will be emphasized and the presentation will focus on the application of this information within risk assessments.
