Description:
Confined Animal Feed Operations (CAFOs) are a growing industry, with a trend towards fewer operations with higher concentrations of animals. Animals are either fed and/or treated with many different types of pharmaceuticals, including antibiotics and hormones, which can end up in waste products. Some of these chemicals, in particular the natural and synthetic hormones, can exert endocrine-disrupting activity in the environment. The overall objective of this research is to evaluate whether animal wastes contain chemicals with EDC activity, and whether these chemicals are sufficiently persistent so as to pose a risk to receiving ground and surface waters.
