Description:

Access to consistent, scientifically credible taxomonic information is essential to many governmental activities. These activities include natural resource management for sustained use, land owner assistance, environmental regulation, and biotechnology development. As part of these activities, the USEPA, USDA, NOAA, National Park Service, Smithsonian Institute, National Biological Information Infrastructure, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, and National Commission for the Knowledge and Use of Biodiversity (CO N ABIO) have partnered in the establishment of ITIS. Specifically, the U.S., Canadian, and Mexican partners have established the ITIS North American Site, and during 2001, have activated the Bacillariophyta section of the system. This section contains 3,594 accepted taxa including 3,272 accepted species, varieties, and forms of diatoms. This presentation announces and introduces the Bacillariophyta may be accessed at http://www.itis.usda.gov/ or http://sis.agr.gc.ca/pls/itisca/taxaget?p ifx=plglt.
