USING LIFE CYCLE ASSESSMENT TOOLS FOR INTEGRATED PRODUCT POLICY

Citation:

Curran*, M A. USING LIFE CYCLE ASSESSMENT TOOLS FOR INTEGRATED PRODUCT POLICY. Presented at 7th European Roundtable on Cleaner Production, Lund, Sweden, 5/2-4/2001.

Description:

There is a growing awareness that a single issue approach to an environmental problem may not lead to an effective long-term strategy. Instead, governments and industries around the world are seeing the value and need to look at the entire life cycle of products and processes from cradle to grave. The pressure to assess the overall environmental characteristics of products and processes has been more intense in Europe than elsewhere. The interest by regulatory bodies has also influenced the pase of adopting the life cycle concept in Europe. The European Union's new Integrated Product Policy (IPP), which is being based on the product life cycle concept thinking, is the most recent example of how policy makers are recognizing the need for broader-based strategies.
