ON DEVELOPING TOOLS AND METHODS FOR ENVIRONMENTALLY BENIGN PROCESSES

Citation:

Sikdar*, S K. ON DEVELOPING TOOLS AND METHODS FOR ENVIRONMENTALLY BENIGN PROCESSES. Presented at IUPAC Chemrawn XIV Conference, Boulder, CO, 6/9-13/2001.

Description:

Two types of tools are generally needed for designing processes and products that are cleaner from environmental impact perspectives. The first kind is called process tools. Process tools are based on information obtained from experimental investigations in chemistry., material science, and biotechnology. The so called green syntheses and high performance separation technologies (a processes or unit operations) of manufacturing processes. The second type of tools is called analytical tools. Thes tools are usually models (mathematical or computer-based) methods or protocols that offer process simulation, design process integration, product design, product or process evaluation, etc. In its most integrated form these tools provide system-wide analysis or designs of environmental impacts. A thorough assessment can only be made when a life cycle assessment methodology that incorporates a cradle to grave scenario. EPA research on these tools is the subject of this talk.
