REGIONAL EMAP PROPOSALS

Citation:

Detenbeck, N E., M F. Moffett, AND J A. Thompson. REGIONAL EMAP PROPOSALS. Presented at Annual Biological Assessment for Wetlands Workgroup Meeting, Washington, D.C, January 12-14, 2000.

Description:

The US EPA's Environmental Assessment and Monitoring Program (EMAP) annually funds regional EMAP (REMAP) projects through each of the regions to support the improvement of monitoring activities by the states. The last call for proposals emphasized the need to support biological monitoring. Two pre-proposals were approved that could contribute to the development of wetlands biocriteria. One proposal, submitted by Region V, seeks to assess condition of fish communities across coastal wetlands in four Great Lakes through a stratified random sampling design. In addition, the regional variation in reference condition will be assessed for one specific coastal wetland type (drowned river mouth wetlands) based on metrics for fish, macroinvertebrate, and plant communities, with comparisons between northern and southern Lake Michigan. A second proposal, submitted by Region 8, seeks to develop metrics for riparian wetlands associated with floodplains of the Upper Missouri River. If funded, these projects will provide an opportunity to test methods for stratifying wetlands for assessment of reference condition as well as to test metrics for two unique wetland types. Previous work on biological indicator development for wetlands has tended to focus on a single hydrogeomorphic class of wetlands - basin wetlands, while ignoring fringe and riparian wetlands.
