THE EFFECT OF FLUORIDE ON CONVENTIONAL WATER TREATMENT USING ALUMINUM SULFATE

Citation:

Lytle*, D A. THE EFFECT OF FLUORIDE ON CONVENTIONAL WATER TREATMENT USING ALUMINUM SULFATE. Presented at AWWA WQTC, Salt Lake City, UT, November 2000.

Description:

Based on the Information Collection Rule survey results of 600 large utilities, approximately 50% of them fluoridate their water and of those, 15-20% do so at the location of coagulant addition. In this case, the effect of fluoride on the coagulation process, floc properties, coagulant chemistry, and particle removal efficiency is undertain. The objective of this research was to evaluate the effect of fluoride on the reduction of turbidity and removal of particles during rapid mix/flocculation/sedimentation using aluminum sulfate (alum). The mechanism by which fluoride impacts the treatment process will also be discussed.
