Description:

An electrospray mass spectrometric method has been developed for application to agricultural and horticultural fertilizers to determine perchlorate. After fertilizers are leached or dissolved in water, the method relies on the formation of stable ion pair complex of the perchlorate anion with a cationic surfactant (quaternary ammonium ion). The association complexes are extracted in methylene chloride or methyl isobutyl ketone. The molecular ions detected in negative ion mode consist of 1 detergent cation and 2 anions either perchlorate/perchlorate or perchlorate/bromide. For these experiments, we used decyltrimethylammonium bromide, which is the source of bromide ion. Detection limits are less than or equal to 0.1 mg/g for this method. other than sodium nitrate (chile saltpeter) derived from natural caliche, we did not detect perchlorate in any sampled material.
