EDUCATIONAL OUTREACH PRESENTATION

Citation:

Corry, T D. EDUCATIONAL OUTREACH PRESENTATION. Presented at High School Biology Class, Duluth, MN, Sept. 30, 1999.

Description:

Exotic species have had major impacts on the ecology of the Great Lakes ecosystem. Different state, private, and Federal agencies have addressed the problem by conducting research to understand the mechanisms, scope, and possible outcomes of the introductions. Public awareness has been identified by the Minnesota Sea Grant program as a major factor in stopping further spread to adjacent waters of these exotic species.
At the EPA in Duluth MN, research conducted into stressors on the Great Lakes ecosystem has identified exotic species as a contributing factor influencing ecosystem health. The research conducted by the Watershed/Ecosystem Effects Research Branch over the last several years has uncovered information pertaining to the food web dynamics of several of the Great Lakes. As part of this lab's efforts to "get the word out" contributing to public awareness and therefore helping prevent the spread of exotic species, I will be giving a talk to a local high school biology class outlining the research and current knowledge pertaining to exotic species within the Great Lakes ecosystems.
