SEDIMENTS: A RESERVOIR OF HISTORIC CONTAMINATION OF THE ENVIRONMENT

Citation:

Rossmann, R. SEDIMENTS: A RESERVOIR OF HISTORIC CONTAMINATION OF THE ENVIRONMENT. Presented at Great Lakes Town Meeting, St. Clair Shores , MI, September 1, 1999.

Description:

Sediments contain contaminants derived from past activities that seriously degraded the environment.

During low water, sediments are subject to natural erosion or removal for navigation.

Erosion or dredging of sediment will release contaminants into the environment where they may bioconcentrate in the food chain.

Prior to dredging the degree of sediment contamination must be determined for proper disposal of the dredged materials.

During dredging, care must be taken not to release contaminated sediments into the water.
