Description:

This is an abstract of a proposed presentation and does not necessarily reflect EPA policy.

The Health Divisions of the US EPA National Health and Environmental Effects Research Laboratory have a guideline for conducting technical systems audits. As part of the guideline there is a somewhat generic checklist to help us focus on various health effects projects. The QA Managers over the past five years have used this guideline and modified the checklist, as needed, to conduct audits of studies involving several health effects research activities, including extramural and intramural epidemiology field studies for PM2.5, both human and animal controlled-exposure studies for PM2.5, pathology studies, bioassays, and GIS modeling. We will provide an overview of the audit guidelines, as well as specific examples of the checklists used for the research activities previously described. This will illustrate the flexibility of the checklist and highlight how it can be applied to the diverse studies that are encountered when reviewing health effects research.
