TREATMENT CONSIDERATIONS FOR MICROBIAL REMOVAL

Citation:

Fox*, K R. TREATMENT CONSIDERATIONS FOR MICROBIAL REMOVAL. Presented at North Carolina Waterworks Operators School, Raleigh, NC, 9/25-29/2000.

Description:

This presentation will focus on filtration and related processes for removing microbes from drinking water. In recent years, the emphsis on the need to remove microbes from drinking water has increased. This increased concern was brought about partly by documented waterborne disease outbreaks in the US. Cryptosporidium concerns were elevated after the cryptosporidiosis outbreak in Milwaukee. Other outbreaks from E. coli and salmonella were not as large as the Milwaukee outbreak, but still have created concern about these organisms. This talk will discuss the ability of filtration systems to remove microorganisms. This talk will also discuss the conditions in a filtration process operation that will allow organisms to pass through the system. Case studies will be presented to emphasize the need for diligent operation of filtration systems.
