Description:

The Mine Waste Technology Program (MWTP) is an interagency agreement with the DOE and has partnerships with Universities, Forest Service, BLM, Industry and states. The mission of the MWTP is to provide engineering solutions to national environmental issues resulting from the past practices of mining and smelting of metallic ores. The MWTP develops and conducts a program that emphasizes treatment technology development, testing and evaluation at bench- and pilot-scale, and an education program that emphasizes training and techynology transfer. The focus is to reduce the mobility, toxicity, and volume of waste; implementability; short- and long-term effectiveness; protection of human health and the environmentl; community acceptance; and cost reduction. The projects described in the presentation included grouting, in-situ boreactors; mine sealing, treatment options for arsenic, cyanide, mercury, nitrate, selenium and remote site neutralization; and capping/revegetation. MSE-Technology Applications performs the technology demonstratons while Montana Tech does the bsic research.
