CONANT CREEK, FREMONT COUNTY, IDAHO WATER QUALITY STATUS REPORT, 1986

Description:

Conant Creek, Idaho (17040203) is a major tributary of the Falls River and is implicated as a major contributor of sediment. The 1983 Idaho Agricultural Pollution Abatement Plan identified the Falls River as being moderately affected by sediment from agricultural lands. The purpose of this study was to determine if erosion from agricultural lands adversely affects the water quality of Conant Creek and its tributaries and to evaluate the effect of Conant Creek on the Falls River. The upper and lower Conant Creek subdrainages showed disproportionate percentages of suspended sediment loading, with the greatest loading in the upper subdrainage. Forest boundary stations suggest that a considerable amount of organic compounds are coming from the forest lands (total Kjedhahl nitrogen and total ammonia). However, the elevated concentrations of nitrate (including nitrite form) at lower stations is probably due to agricultural related activities. Phosphorus concentrations appear proportional to stream flow and sediment loading. Soil erosion during runoff periods is the likely cause. Fecal coliform/fecal streptococcus ratios indicate bacterial pollution is generally from non-human sources. Spinner, G. 1986. Water Quality Status Report No. 71.
