WATER QUALITY STATUS REPORT, BIG ELK CREEK, IDAHO COUNTY IDAHO, 1986

Description:

Big Elk Creek (17060305) serves as a receiving stream for wastewater lagoons in Elk City, Idaho. The purpose of the study was to review the water quality of Big Elk Creek in order to recommend discharge limits for the pending facility upgrade and subsequent NPDES permit. Additionally, the study attempted to evaluate possible leakage from the lagoons. Except for high fecal coliform counts, the quality of the effluent sampled was within equivalent-to-secondary treatment standards. Accordingly, disinfection should be included within the treatment process. Unfortunately, the limited study did not supply sufficient information to determine if the lagoons are capable of accepting the imposed hydraulic flows. River samples did not indicate that leakage, if any, from the lagoons was effecting the water quality of Big Elk Creek. The effluent flows through a marshy area and then enters Big Elk Creek. The effluent quality was not significantly improved as it passes through this area. Von Lindern, M.P. and Dekan G.M. 1987. Water Quality Status Report No. 74.
