FIELD EVALUATION OF NEW NOX/O3 PRECURSOR METHODS

Impact/Purpose:

1. Provide the Agency with semi-continuous and real-time instrumentation for its monitoring of ozone, ozone precursors, and reaction products of ozone formation.

2. Provide the Agency with semi-continuous and real-time instrumentation for its monitoring of water-soluble PM components and water-soluble atmospheric gases.

Description:

Ozone is a secondary pollutant that is produced in the ambient air through atmospheric photochemistry. In any given region, current air quality simulation models predict that the limitation on ozone production can be the concentration of either nitrogen oxides or volatile organic hydrocarbons. These in turn depend on the emission sources, the nature of long range transport in the region and the weather conditions. Characterization of the ambient concentrations of ozone and its precursors is essential to determine the accuracy of model predictions and ultimately to select the most effective control strategy for ozone precursors. Successful demonstrations of new instrumentation for monitoring ambient NO2, HCHO, HNO3, HNO2, H2O2, individual polar volatile organic compounds, and particle nitrate, sulfate, and ammonium have recently been conducted, and refinements of these instruments are continuing. Of particular interest is the completion the 2003 comparison of nitrate monitoring instrumentation in California and the completion of comparisons of NO2 and NO measurements in a cooperative monitoring project with the Region 6. Additional field tests for comparison of monitors for particulate nitrate, sulfate, and other water soluble particulate components are planned for FY05 using an EPA trailer as a monitoring site.
