Impact/Purpose:
The objective of this program is to promote the acceptance and use of innovative field technologies by providing well-documented performance and cost data obtained from field demonstrations.
Description:
This task seeks to identify high priority needs of the Regions and Program Offices for innovative field sampling, characterization, monitoring, and measurement technologies. When an appropriate solution to a specific problem is identified, a field demonstration is conducted to document the performance and cost of the proposed technologies. The use of field analysis almost always provides a savings in time and cost over the usual sample and ship to a conventional laboratory for analysis approach to site characterization and monitoring. With improvements in technology and appropriate quality assurance/quality control, field analysis has been shown to provide high quality data, useful for most environmental monitoring or characterization projects. An emphasis of the program is to seek out innovative solutions to existing problems and to provide the cost and performance data a user would require to make an informed decision regarding the adequacy of a technology to address a specific environmental problem.

Project Information:
Progress :A search has been completed for vendors of field-portable technologies that are capable of measuring mercury in soils. Five vendors have indicated that they are willing to participate in the field demonstration. The demonstration plan has been completed. The demonstration was conducted in May 2003 and final reports were completed by December 2003.A search for potential vendors of field-portable technologies that are capable of measuring dioxins in soils yielded 5 candidates. The State of Michigan has agreed to host the demonstration which was held in April 2004. The demonstration plan was completed and final reports are in preparation.
A search for vendors of field-portable multi-element X-ray fluorescence has been completed. Ten developers were identified and have agreed to participate in the demonstration. The demonstration plan is being prepared. The demonstration will take place in January at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

Relevance :Demonstration topic areas are chosen with respect to priority needs of the Regions and Program Offices. The demonstrations are intended to have a high visibility and considerable impact on a variety of projects throughout the EPA. In addition to identifying new technologies that may produce better quality data, cost savings associated with the use of the new technologies are also presented. Where technology gaps remain, the program identifies topic areas which may require additional research or technology development. Once a demonstration is complete, a case study applying one or more of the technologies is developed. This case study provides a clear example of how the technology may be used by the Agency, States, county and local governments, academia, industry, and consultants.
