During the week of August 13th - 15th, 2003, CVI and NERL/ERD participated in a joint workshop and peer review of the combined program. Presentations were made by CVI and EPA PIs, and one day was devoted to a review of the research plan. Three external peer reviewers provided comments in written form following the review, and these comments have been incorporated where applicable into the current approach. A hard copy of the peer review documents is kept by the Task Leader (John Johnston) and is available upon request.
During the peer review, CVI suggested three short term products for delivery in the first quarter FY04. Two products are quick summaries of work to date: Habitat Suitability Index (HSI) for longnose dace, and the clustering of EMAP Highlands fish communities. Both of these summaries are to be delivered as brief technical summaries suitable for stakeholder distribution. The other two products are software examples: Bioaccumulation and Aquatic System Simulator (BASS) scenarios for trout management and a demonstration of the CVI software interface for the decision support system.
Desktop and web-based versions of the CVI WHAT IF? (Watershed Health Assessment Tools Investigating Fisheries) were delivered to CVI in May 2004. Two software training sessions were held in Athens, GA at the Univ. of Georgia Continuing Education Center. EPA Regions III, IV and V were in attendence in addition to CVI clients in Virginia. CVI is hosting a third training session at its headquarters in Thomas, WV in December 2004. State, local, and USFWS aquatic resource managers are the primary invitees. The training will cover the use of the complete CVI toolset: Hydrology, Stream Fish Assemblage Predictor, Habitat Suitability Scorer and BMP tool and the BASS model. Screening/prioritization tools will be demonstrated (to show monitoring data and illustrate statistical data interpolation) in utility alongside local scale implementation tools such as BASS for investigating stocking and habitat restoration outcomes via dynamic model application.
Client and stakeholder feedback on software useability will be incorporated into the user interface. EMAP data will be combined with regional (REMAP) state fisheries and habitat data to provide a complete package (i.e., assessment approach and test datasets) for clients for distribution via WWW and CDROM. Screening/prioritization tools (Hydro, Clustering, and Habitat Suitability) will be incorporated into a single relational database to provide GIS attribute tables for REVA integration (query, mapping and visualization) and for regional BASS model application to sites of concern (initial conditions, reference EMAP sites, watershed characteristics).
Community-based environmental management is a long-term goal of the Agency, and providing the methods/tools and technical transfer mechanisms to achieve this goal are critical to the role of ORD. Effective client collaborations are the most efficient means to achieve this. CVI provides outreach to the Mid-Atlantic Highlands region for local environmental protection, including Clean Water Act, Section 303d list and TMDLs. The Chesapeake Bay Program Office, Regions III and IV and the Office of Water are longer-term clients of this research.
