Description:

This research study was initiated to identify resistant materials for construction of wastewater treatment plants using the oxygen activated sludge process. In this investigation, samples of a broad range of construction materials were exposed for periods up to 28 months in the aeration basins of three operating municipal wastewater treatment plants. All three plants were using oxygen-activated sludge processes during the exposure period. Materials exposed included metallics, portland cement concretes, and plastic and rubber materials. An economic analysis was also conducted to evaluate the impact of materials recommendations generated by the exposure testing.
