Description:

The use of Chromosorb T, an aggregate of poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE, Teflon), to concentrate trace organic substances from aqueous solution by column chromatography is investigated. Differences in capacity between two different PTFE aggregates are linked to differences in surface morphology rather than simply surface area. Capacity is inversely related to solubility of solute for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. However, this correlation breaks down if the solute is a nitrogen heterocycle. Recovery studies indicate that Chromosorb T gives quantitative recovery of a variety of solutes at a concentration of 50 ppb in aqueous solutions containing 2 ppm humic acid.
