Description:

Sheepshead minnows (Cyprinodon variegatus) were exposed to each of three pesticides--methoxychlor, malathion, and carbofuran--in flowing seawater to determine the acute and chronic (partial life-cycle) effects. Mortality of adult fish exposed to concentrations of methoxychlor > or - 23 micrograms/l and hatching success of fry from eggs spawned by fish exposed to 23 micrograms/l were significantly different from the control. Mortality of adult fish exposed to concentrations of malathion > or - 18 micrograms/l and mortality of fry hatched from eggs spawned by fish exposed to 9 and 18 micrograms/l were significantly different from the control. Mortality of adult fish exposed to concentrations of carbofuran > or - 49 micrograms/l, hatching success of fry from eggs spawned by fish exposed to 49 micrograms/l, and mortality of fry hatched from eggs spawned by fish exposed to 23 and 49 micrograms/l were significantly different from the control.
