The symposium focuses on the essential role of research and regulatory agencies in protecting marine ecosystems. The purpose of the symposium is to commemorate dedication of a new toxicological test facility at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Environmental Research Laboratory in Gulf Breeze, Florida, on October 7, 1977. Participants define the special function of the federal agency scientist, the social responsibility of the scientist, and the need for research in support of environmental regulation. Historical and future objectives of the Gulf Breeze Laboratory are also reviewed.
