In this chapter, the general patterns and causes of climate over the western United States are described. ore detailed climatic descriptions are then presented for the five regions of the western nited States discussed later in this volume: Northwestern Washington (Chapter 8); the Colorado Front Range (Chapter 9); Arizona and New Mexico (Chapter 10); Sierra Nevada (Chapter 11); and southern California (Chapter 12). ean seasonal temperature and precipitation are characterized for selected climatic divisions within the regions. The Palmer Drought Severity Index is used to discuss temporal variability in the climate of these regions.
